Kimberly m. Pollis
I have worked as a professional artist and graphic designer since 1983. After attending the New England School of Art and Design, I served as the Art Director for New England Telephone from 1988 - 1992. While I am an experienced painter, my main work is hand-punched metal art in the New Mexican tin smithing tradition. I have practiced and taught traditional New Mexican tin smithing for more than twenty years after studying under the New Mexican master artist Ted Arellanes in 1999. My work consists of designing both decorative and functional metal art pieces which include picture/ painting frames, light switch plates, cabinet panels, lamp shades, religious "nichos", and ornaments. I personally design, punch, hammer, cut out, shape, steel wool, and patina each individual piece.
My work has been commissioned by organizations around the state including the historic La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe for which I designed and handcrafted more than 300 metal frames for each room number sign. I also worked for the Lama Foundation to design and produce 16 ornamental copper ceiling tiles for a Sikh dargah shrine in 2017. I have won awards from the Taos Fall Arts show and an honorable mention for design excellence from the American Institute of Architects in 2013 for my bus shelter designs for the city of Santa Fe. For more than a decade, I have taught this craft in schools around the state, including Taos Charter School, Taos Middle School, Enos Garcia Elementary, Arroyo del Norte Elementary, Dixon Public Schools, Chimayo Middle School, and Española Public Schools.
